I was playing with this yesterday and based on a suggestion by Raymond 
Toy on #lisp was able to get slime to work if I  set 
*use-dedicated-output-stream* to NIL

(you might also find the fink packages for slime and cmucl convenient, 
if you have fink installed on your system)
