Looks eerily familiar.  See the archive under the thread that I started called
"Problem with descendants of STANDARD-CLASS". It took a while to track down
(mostly because of unhelpful or misleading backtraces), but it's a CLOS bug. An
important slot in STANDARD-CLASS isn't getting propagated to its subclasses.
