I also use a multiple frames setup, and I've found
(setq-default display-buffer-reuse-frames t)
an essential ingredient for that.
As I use three frames aligned vertically, I also have
(tool-bar-mode -1)
(scroll-bar-mode -1)
in my .emacs to maximize usable screen estate.
