I don't use CLISP, but I do use Mac OS X, XEmacs and SLIME:

  Mac OS X  10.4.3
  XEmacs  21.5.20  (therefore somewhat out-of-date)
  SLIME  cvs head as of 22 December 2005
  LispWorks  4.4.6
  SBCL  0.9.7
  OpenMCL  1.0
  
So no, I don't think that SLIME on OS X/XEmacs is broken per se.
