[slime-devel] getting no slime repl prompt

I'm not getting it, I run into the following trouble
System Debian 2.6.x, SBCL 0.9.7.x 0.9.8.x the 
actual source from the slime cvs repository. 
Xemacs 21.4.18. 

Now if I'm staring slime for this SBCL it loads fine till I got the
*inferior-lisp* buffer. The last message I see is 
Process bridge is installed.

And that's it I got not repl and therefor no connection to the running
SBCL. 

What am I missing?
