I haven't noticed that with Allegro/SLIME under w2k.
When it happens, did you try pressing "C-h k SPC" to see whether space was
still bound to slime-space? Perhaps some other emacs code is re-defining
the space key. If it is still bound, did you try debugging slime-space and
slime-arglist in emacs?
