I do not know anything on your question about Verrazano being ready for 
general use, but to get the software you can try the web interface, ViewCVS:

  http://common-lisp.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/verrazano/?cvsroot=fetter

It has a nightly tarball you can grab. See the link at the bottom of the 
page.
