There is no other way. CMU's format needs gray streams because it is
implemented using some intermediate streams to which things are output. Same
goes for pretty printer.

Yes, this version is not thread safe, it is not ANSI compliant (lots of
functionality missing, specially pretty printing) and there are other
problems around it. Same happens with the pretty printer.
