Well, the problem was not actually with --enable-debug, but rather
with Autoconf: it sets CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS to a value that contains debug
flags. I found it out today. There is no way to override this without
breaking user builds in which the user sets its own value of CFLAGS or
CXXFLAGS.
