I looked into the ecl 0.9i linking problem on Gentoo and posted my
findings in this bug:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156182

Summary: it is a gentoo issue and 0.9i works well.
I think that the Gentoo common-lisp herd is woefully understaffed.
