My reasoning was, from the very beginning, self-consistency. That people 
do not have to go around tracking packages. This is automatic in the 
linux world, but for instance the Windows port would suffer, since one 
would have to look for the GMP library and properly place it in the 
source tree -- this is true for the MSVC port.
