I finally ended up continuing from what I had for backward isearch,
which I think behaves a bit more like emacs' isearch, but the basic
idea seems to be the same as that of your patch, with a direction
parameter kept in the current search state. By the way, I would
appreciate any comment on the code, as I'm really not sure I took
the right path for that feature.
