I had a workaround but it was very messy.  It is working perfectly now.

I have run into changes in tar, I thought it was one of those untouchably
stable programs having been around for years, but found I was wrong.
A script I
had written broke on a friends machine because debian used a different
version of tar than archlinux, go figure.
