I think you mean that the swank-server is bound to 127.0.0.1:4005.

I see.  I do
/Applications/openmcl/ccl/scripts/openmcl -l /Users/chr/lisp/boxset/ 
ucw-boxset/start.lisp
in the terminal, and then I do
M-X slime-connect from emacs, answering host: localhost and port: 4005.

Works great!
