You were right, I installed the following packages 
(on ubuntu) and now it almost works
tetex-bin
tetex-base
tetex-extras (forgot that one before)

Now I can build the reference.pdf, but when I try to
make the tutorial I get the error below. I tried to 
install some random tex packages related to graphics,
but it didn't help so I give up for this time...
