Finally got it to work. The most likely culprit as near as I can tell is
SBCL 0.9.10. I updated to 0.9.11 this morning and now it works! It might
have had to do with recompiling all of the fasls, not sure. 

Just curious if any of the test setups you tried are SBCL 0.9.10? you might
be able to confirm or deny whether the SBCL version was the culprit. I
hadn't thought one minor version number of SBCL was going to make that big
of a difference which was why I hadn't updated yet. 

I did also update a number of other packages, but trivial-sockets was
already the most recent darcs from verisons.telent.net (tagged release_0_3).


Odd, but hopefully now resolved. Thanks for all the help.
