I meant:

why not
instead of REQUEST-URI*

use something like:

(defclass request ()
 ((uri)))
(defgeneric request-uri (&optional req))
(defmethod request-uri (&optional (req request))
 (when (null req) ...

though maybe sacrificing backwards-compatibility 
is better than writing all that :)
