That's it: some months ago I played around with the geben package (http://code.google.com/p/geben-on-emacs/), which installs dbgp.el.  When I remove geben from my init.el all is well.

A Google search for dbgp-buffer-process brings up an emacs file called
dbgp.el and that seems add an defadvice for open-network-stream.  Have
you installed said dbgp.el?  That would explain the strange error.
