The default setup was changed in recent weeks.  You should be able to 
generate an up-to-date
slime.info in your slime 'doc' subdirectory.  With that updated 
documentation, you should be
able to read the current description of the REPL with the following 
command in Emacs:

     M-:  (Info-goto-node "(slime)REPL")

This includes a description of (one of) the current methods for starting 
the REPL.
