Did you ask it to install the contrib branch?  If not, why would you
expect it to do so?

This is because of a design feature in CVS, which does not allow
branches to have independent directories: if a directory is present in
a branch, it must be present in all branches, including the HEAD
branch.

"cvs update -rcontrib" will request the contrib branch.

The code that you have obtained _is_ the old structure; it seems to me
