I have a little more information on this issue.  If I clear out
~/.slime/fasl , SLIME doesn't freeze - I get a friendly REPL and everything
is fine.  If I attempt to open a SLIME session again (even in a fresh Emacs
session), it hangs while connecting - unless I clear out ~/.slime/fasl
again.
