It looks like you didn't reload the Elisp code after the upgrade.  The
first few lines of the *inferior-lisp* buffer should look like:

(progn (load "swank-loader.lisp" :verbose t) 
       (funcall (read-from-string "swank:start-server") "/tmp/slime.8419" 
                :coding-system "iso-latin-1-unix"))

older versions used :external-format :iso-latin-1-unix.

I don't have OpenMCL and can't say whether the OpenMCL backend is
broken in some other way.
