Yes. I can start up a fresh XEmacs, start SLIME, and evaluate those
two forms, getting stuck in the same way every time.

It does? I would expect to see some indication that "n" is bound to

Whenever I see that, I figure my SLIME connection is now messed up
beyond repair. Here, it's strange that I can seemingly recover.
