You should upgrade to CVS SLIME.

In recent versions of SBCL, the external coding depends on the phase
of the moon (or a bunch of random environment variables).  That's a
little to unpredictable for SLIME-1.0.

CVS SLIME should work with newer SBCLs (but may no longer work with
older SBCLs).
