Try upgrading to the latest SLIME version.  Funny environment settings
make newish SBCL emit unicode characters and old SLIME versions don't
like that.

If that doesn't help, enable debug-on-error in Emacs and show us the
full backtrace.  Also set *log-events* to T in swank.lisp and send the
contents of the *inferior-lisp* buffer.
