I compiled XEmacs 21.4.18, and everything seems to be working fine. I
was using my distribution's (Ubuntu's) XEmacs 21.4.17, which is
definitely stripped, if that makes a difference, though I don't quite
understand why.

I'll just use my compiled version without ever really grasping what
the problem is or was.  Just following up.
