No, I'm not sure at all, as I was only looking at the FAIRLY-STABLE
version here. The version you shared achieves what I set out to do and
more.

I agree; it looks like the right improvement.

Sorry for posting an outdated patch. Moving forward, I'll have to set
up a CVS sandbox against the the head for these kinds of proposals.
