One of my main resources was Google actually. Try a search for "vga
programming" and a number of tutorials will turn up. One that I found useful
(however, avoid the sections about using BIOS calls) was:

VGA programming is very rewarding due to its graphical nature, so if you are
interested I would urge you to try it.
I'm just fleshing out some routines (line, circle etc.) so perhaps someone
could make some simple vector graphics demos (or even games!).
I hope to have the vector routines (along with some simple compression on that
image) and a diff made up by the end of the weekend.
