 Cached checkout does not auto-maintain references to checked out objects:
 1) We can lose objects and state invisibly if user does not maintain
 reference
 2) We don't know what's been checked out; cannot flush dirty instances on
 close
 3) What happens if we call delete-instance and the object is still cached?
