i think a backend using SQLite directly would make a lot of sense

explanation on BDB's site says that if you, say, use Elephant rather than
BDB directly, and Elephant is open source, that is enough to be eligible
for a "free" BDB version. it is up to a lawyers to decide if it is such.
i betcha if you ask Oracle directly they'll say "of course you need a 
commercial version" :)
