* LOAD admits a new keyword :EXTERNAL-FORMAT

* The external format :DEFAULT actually refers to the content of the
variable EXT:*DEFAULT-EXTERNAL-FORMAT*, which contains the name of a valid
format.

* :PASS-THROUGH is the default format in most platforms, though this can be
negotiated.
