Gabriel, sometimes it is comfortable and easy to adopt rant style, but
there are many issues to consider: reading, writing, operations,
switching on and off.

I am not saying it will not be done, but this is work that the CL
specification already did for a particular choice (no IEEE-754
"special" numbers) and has to be redone for a different one.

I personally appreciate the CL specification's consistency and would
not like to just patch in NaNs and Infs, but rather get things right
with as little disruption as possible. Probably SBCL's source code has
something to say on this -- the manual gives no clue about their
choices.
