FAIRLY_STABLE is not in use since years. Always use CVS HEAD of Slime.
ECL from git checked out on 30-Jul-2009 works fine with Slime HEAD for
me.

Perhaps you can report the actual error that you get in your
*inferior-lisp* buffer.
