SLIME did this. I added the following to swank-ecl which seems to work:

(if (find-package :gray)
  (import-from :gray *gray-stream-symbols* :swank-backend)
  (import-from :ext *gray-stream-symbols* :swank-backend))

now SLIME works again with ecl...
