Your sugestion solution worked fine. Thanks!
The interesting thing is that if I execute src/config.guess it returns the appropriate value, i686-pc-linux.

similar
problems
in
the
past
and
tried..
./configure
--build=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--host=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--target=i686-pc-linux-gnu
..which
worked.
