[Ecls-list] string hashing

I just ran the Marsden lisp benchmarks
(http://www.chez.com/emarsden/downloads/) on ECL 0.9i to compare against
SBCL 0.9.8.

The results are attached.

For those who prefer a summary...

Comparing to the 2004 benchmarks on cLiki
(http://www.cliki.net/Performance%20Benchmarks) I see a lot of
improvement on the worst offenders of 2004: HASH-STRINGS, FFT, PUZZLE,
TRIANGLE, RICHARDS, 2D-ARRAYS, many of the the CLOS tests with a notable
exception of SIMPLE-INSTANTIATE.

There are two noticeable areas where performance relative to SBCL
slipped as well: CLOS/SIMPLE-INSTANTIATE and SEARCH-SEQUENCE.

Both SBCL and ECL are moving targets so performance differences between
2004 and 2007 results could be due to changes in either SBCL and ECL
performance. Overall, it looks like ECL performance is moving ahead nicely.

Cheers,

Andrew
