Right, my patch clearly isn't the answer.
All I'm saying is that if the configure script needs to distinguish between
32-bit and 64-bit *architectures* (not CPUs), then 'uname -m' appears to be
suitable. On my system it correctly indicates a 32-bit architecture, despite
the 64-bit CPU.
