I wrote to the Mercurial mailing list. This all seems to do with a
problem in file names which are equivalent after case folding. The OSX
filesystem is indeed case insensitive and might be the source of the
problem. I had never thought about it before. It is quite possible
that files in the Boehm-Weiser GC have been replaced by others with
the same name as in alpha.s -> alpha.S (*) This is a change which is
very difficult for me to control, given that it may happen after
several revisions. It seems the only answer is to keep the repository
always in a Unix-like machine :-/

(*) I seem to recall files in the GC and perhaps in the GMP changing
name like this several times *.s -> *.S -> *.s...
