Yesterday, when I was trying out the CVS run-in-place against (require
:cl-ppcre), I thought it was snappier than my usual cmucl (and that
thought is different from the last time I played with ECL).  I started
to play with it to see if ECL could run my current project code, but
didn't get very far.  I'm going to clear off a test machine later and
try with a proper install.
