Ok, here is the patch. The string handling routines are probably still
misplaced and ugly... An option could be to remove them and make :case
:common a no-op. I don't know. I just wanted to get whatever is usable
from this patch into the tree.
I have also changed the behaviour of the file handling routines to
silently accept :version :newest, which should not break anything, but
is needed for ASDF.
