This looks like a bug in GCL, not in CL-PPCRE.

As to CL-PPCRE being very slow on ECL it'd be nice if you could
provide a specific example. IIRC Juan-José is subscribed to this
list, so maybe he wants to chime in if there's something in CL-PPCRE
that's specifically problematic for ECL.
