[cl-pdf-devel] non-sentence ending period?

What's the best way to get a non-sentence-ending period in cl-pdf/cl- 
typesetting?

I'd like to have something like:

John Q. Public

but when I try to do this, I get something that looks more like:

John Q.  Public

Any ideas?
