once-only (name*) form* +

once-only (name*) body-form*

Arguments and Values:

name---a symbol.

-form---a form.

+body-form---a form.

Description:

Meant to be used in macro code, once-only guards against -multiple evaluation of its arguments in macroexpansion code. Any -concise description would be far too vague to grasp, but this -thread on comp.lang.lisp does a decent job of explaining what -once-only does. - -

Notes:

- -

The description here is frustratingly non-descriptive, and I -apologize for that. If you understand once-only and can give a -better explanation, I would be very grateful—not to mention -completely awed. +multiple evaluation of its arguments in macroexpansion code.

+ +

once-only generates a Lisp form that evaluates each lexical +variable named by the symbols given as name arguments to +once-only, and evaluates the body forms in a lexical environment where +these results are bound to their respective originating symbol.

+ +

That is, if the only name argument were the single 'alpha +symbol, the body forms would be evaluated in a lexical environment +where 'alpha is bound to the result of the evaluation of alpha in the +lexical environment of the generated Lisp form.

+ +

Example:

+ +

With the following 3x macro:

+ +
(defmacro 3x (x)
+  `(+ ,x ,x ,x))
+ +

These three forms evaluate to the same result because the form +given as x argument is referencially transparent (i.e. it +yields the same result each time it's evaluated):

+ +
(3x 2) === 6
+(3x (1+ 1)) === 6
+(let ((a 1)) (3x (1+ a))) === 6
+ +

But the following form has an argument that has side-effects and has different results for each of the three +times it will be evaluated:

+ +
(let ((a 1)) (3x (incf a))) === 9
+ +

The problem is solved by protecting the body of the macro with +once-only:

+ +
(defmacro 3x (x)
+  (once-only (x)
+    `(+ ,x ,x ,x)))
+
+(let ((a 1)) (3x (incf a))) === 6

These are minor versions with mostly bugfixes. A major change is that LispWorks 5.0/5.0.1 is now officially supported. (All supported Lisp implementations are now again supported in their newest versions.) Here are some highlights of the new releases: MOP Feature Tests 0.44: - Added new tests for standard metaobject classes. - Simplified output for feature reports. - Added a report function for quick comparison between two versions of a given CL implementation. - Significantly simplified the test for extensible allocations. Closer to MOP 0.41: - Fixed a problem in the handling of initial methods of generic functions in LispWorks. - Added support for LispWorks 5.0/5.0.1. - Fixed a bug in some LOOP idioms. (Thanks to Attila Lendvai.) - Simplified the implementation of some validate-superclass methods. - Changed the format of the contents of features.lisp. Better support for comparing feature changes between different versions of a given CL implementation. - Corrected and added a few feature reports to features.txt. ContextL 0.31: - Added an implicit block to define-layered-method so return-from works as expected. - Fixed a bug in some LOOP idioms. (Thanks to Attila Lendvai.) - Added two versions of the figure editor example from the JMLC'06 paper to the test suite. - Several bug fixes. You can find the libraries in the usual distribution formats, including as asdf-installable packages, at http://common-lisp.net/ project/closer/ Cheers and all the best for new year's eve, Pascal -- Pascal Costanza, mailto:pc at p-cos.net, http://p-cos.net Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Programming Technology Lab Pleinlaan 2, B-1050 Brussel, Belgium _______________________________________________ closer-announce mailing list closer-announce at common-lisp.net http://common-lisp.net/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/closer-announce _______________________________________________ announcements site list announcements at common-lisp.net http://common-lisp.net/mailman/listinfo/announcements From pvaneynd at debian.org Sat Dec 30 00:02:06 2006 From: pvaneynd at debian.org (Peter Van Eynde) Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2006 00:02:06 +0000 Subject: [cl-debian] Accepted common-lisp-controller 6.9 (source all) Message-ID: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Format: 1.7 Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2006 09:05:25 +0100 Source: common-lisp-controller Binary: common-lisp-controller Architecture: source all Version: 6.9 Distribution: unstable Urgency: low Maintainer: Peter Van Eynde Changed-By: Peter Van Eynde Description: common-lisp-controller - This is a Common Lisp source and compiler manager Closes: 399207 Changes: common-lisp-controller (6.9) unstable; urgency=low . * Run debconf-updatepo in the clean target to ensure uptodate PO files.
