From cl-debian at pvaneynd.mailworks.org Fri Mar 4 16:15:28 2005 From: cl-debian at pvaneynd.mailworks.org (Peter Van Eynde) Date: Fri, 04 Mar 2005 17:15:28 +0100 Subject: [cl-debian] Welcome to cl-debian Message-ID: <1109952928.7856.216563160@webmail.messagingengine.com> Hello subscribers of cl-debian and friends, Let me start by saying that I never expected to have so many people on this list. This is a pleasant surprise. I'm willing to sponsor anybody wrt. uploads and to help in packaging and general maintainer stuff. So what needs to be done for Common Lisp on Debian? First of all some packages from Kevin are still open (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/pkgreport.cgi?submitter=kmr%40debian.org): 1 #284376: O: ilisp -- Emacs interface to LISP implementations -> Some emacs experience is needed. This is more or less a morbid package. 2 #297344: O: acl- installer -- Installer for Franz' Allegro 6.2 Lisp Trial Edition -> interest in ACL is needed, should not be to difficult 3 #297346: O: albert 4 #297426: O: langband - The langband Common lisp game 5 #297427: O: langband-data -- The Langband sound/image/etc files for langband engine -> both should be simple CL packages 6 #297429: O: lw-per-installer -- Installer for Lispworks ANSI Common Lisp System, Personal Edition 7 #297431: O: lw-pro-installer - Installer for Xanalys' Lispworks ANSI Common Lisp System 8 #297432: O: lw-pro-installer-43 -- Installer for Xanalys Lispworks Common Lisp System, version 4.3 -> a LWL licence or at least interest in LWL is required for this. 9 #297473: O: openmcl - Native code ANSI Common Lisp compiler and runtime environment 10 #297475: O: openmcl-build-tools - OpenMCL Common Lisp tools for building system -> you better have a Mac to adopt these I still need to close: #297382: O: cl-postoffice - SMTP, POP, & IMAP interface library for Common Lisp Programs #297395: O: cl-rsm-memo -- McIntire's Common Lisp Memoization Library #297398: O: cl-rsm-mpoly -- McIntire's Common Lisp Multivariate Polynomial Library #297436: O: onlisp - book on Common Lisp programming techniques I'm also working on splitting sbcl into a indep and a arch part, but this is rather complex and will require a bit more time to get it to work. I also closed a cl-postoffice bug and I need to fix the hyperspec package (bug #298026). Looking at my bug page (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=maint&data=pvaneynd at debian.org&archive=no) the situation is rather good, most bugs are upstream or features ;-). There is one mystery bug #297801 that I cannot reproduce, has anyone an idea to fix this? Following my blogentry many people showed interest in the following new packages: - cl-s-xml (Luca was working on this): packaged but should become a 'native' package - slime: a long time coming but no progress? - elephant: an object database for Common Lisp - CL-PREVALENCE is an implementation of Object Prevalence for Common Lisp - UnCommon Web is a Common Lisp web application development framework. - cl-snmp: A System Management Substrate for Common Lisp - Common Lisp GNU Scientific Library: we could already start in packaging it knowing it is not ready for primetime yet - AspectL is a library that provides aspect-oriented extensions for Common Lisp / CLOS Any other ideas? Normal asdf based libraries should be _very_ simple to package up. The main work in checking the copyright; seeing if we can have a native package; if the version number should reflect a 'released' package (aka 2.1) or a cvs-date (cvs-20050304) package; and general integration with the rest of debian. For a simple example see the cl-cil package. I currently have both the latest official version as well as a CVS checkout which i debianize - so i could come up with a .deb of a brand new OpenMCL. So if you need help with OpenMCL (or a maintainer, but i'm not currently an official maintainer) i could jump in. I _have_ done a lot of .deb building. > [...] > > I'm also working on splitting sbcl into a indep and a arch part, but > this is rather complex and will require a bit more time to get it to > work. Iff you/we do this: may i propose that UCW is split up into several sub-packages. Well, in my setup (i.e. building with a unicode-enabled sbcl) the build does fail (afairecall there's a break and since the debugger is disabled the build just stops - i fear i've deleted the old build logs ...). Ok, here the /problems/ I'm encountering... UCW requires some external 'libraries': 1) arnesi (http://common-lisp.net/project/bese/arnesi.html), already debianized, at least for the CL sources. I'm trying to solve the -doc package creation with Marco Baringer, but this is a minor issue. 2) yaclml (http://common-lisp.net/project/bese/yaclml.html), already debianized, but the installation depends on another Marco's tool, FiveAM (http://common-lisp.net/project/bese/FiveAM.html), which I debianized ;-) 3) iterate, already present in Debian (Peter is the maintainer), but I should check the differences between the Debian version and the UCW one. 4) mod_lisp, which is the Debian libapache-mod-lisp (maintained by Matthew Danish), but with some differencies. Instead of mod_lisp, you could use araneida, so we should also package it ;-) 5) rfc2388 (http://common-lisp.net/project/rfc2388/), but I cannot find any way to download a release to be debianized :-( 6) SLIME, which should enter Debian soon, even if I haven't heard news about it for a while. 7) portableaserve, already present in Debian (maintained by Peter); instead of this, one could use AllegroServe, which hasn't been packaged for Debian yet. 8) apache :-D Once all these packages will be available on Debian official, packaging UCW should be so simple! Specifically to the first 2 libraries (and even for the future UCW), Marco agreed to make them Debian native packages. I imported them into my arch repository and I'm ready to publish it, but I've a question regarding the debian/changelog: ATM, it contains an entry (when I debianized the package), but if someone download today's arch and create a Debian package from it, the version will be the same as my first debianized package. I don't know if tla-buildpackage takes care of this or not and so I don't know how should I update the debian/changelog. Suggestions? AllegroServe is only for acl. Please note that the acl and lw installers and openmcl are still orphaned: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=submitter&data=kmr%40debian.org&archive=no > Specifically to the first 2 libraries (and even for the future UCW), > Marco agreed to make them Debian native packages. As far as I know if you do a 'apt-get source sbcl' you also build the exact same version as the one in the repository. I do not think there is an easy way to prevent people from building a package with an old version number and newer sources. In the new sbcl package I use a script to create a new version based on the version string of the sources themselves, but even that is not in the main debian/rules file so will not get executed automaticly. Darn, i thought i could flood your inbox with bugreports and patches ;-/ I have 0.14.3 (latest release and bleeding CVS) debianized - but there are some serious bugs in the installation routine (basically the installation of the common lisp controller picks the wrong core file and the core of the created image uses the old version of OpenMCL). After all, we probably should add gentoo-stuff > rpm-specs, BSD portblabla as well, or? Actually, having the debian/ stuff into the upstream package gives you a lot of new possibilities: you can modify something in the sources and then build your own package (without trying to debianize it) or you can just grab the latest development version and, again, build your own package from it. This is my feeling and the reason I'm including a debian/ folder into the two projects I'm coding (which aren't publicly available, yet). However, I agree that it could be the same for Gentoo, RPM and so on. But I'm a Debian user and I don't care about the others distros. What I mean is that if only Debian users ask for inclusion of Debian stuff, this is not the Debian users' fault ;-) Obviously, when the upstream author(s) do(es)n't agree to have a Debian native package, we continue packaging the software as usually. > I somehow like the concept of a separate (physical as well as > mental) "packaging" process. I would say /me too, but having debian/ stuff in upstream sources gives more advantages, so this concept is somehow kept in a drawer ;-) BTW, I answered you directly to the cl-debian mailing-list, as I think it's a general and useful discussion.
