He told me he was not aware of the problems with the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license and was going to relicense AspectlL under the BSD or MIT license. He is still needing some time to evaluate. But fortunately, it seems AspectL does not need to go to non-free, once he has made a decision. :) His gpg-signed reply is appended, but in German. Usually, it tries to show the 10 characters that surround the unknown one for giving a context. Unfortunately, it does not check if there are surrounding 10 characters at all and extents the string bounds, causing a real error instead of just a warning. The main requirements are: * should work with big archives (cmucl) * should support a three-way merge (original, debianised version, new upstream) * can tag releases * off-line use would be great Does anyone have strong ideas about any of the newer systems? I know that the merge is a pain with CVS, so I'm willing to use something else... - Ubuntu: I've setup a MOTUCommonLisp team[1 that could take care of the ubuntu related packages and bugs. It should be a lot easier to get changes and new packages uploaded into ubuntu then it should be into Debian, so I encourage anyone who also uses ubuntu to also become a member. Their main plan[2] is to keep syncing with debian until the 6th or the 7th of July and then 'freeze' and do fixes for a while. So any packages we would like to have as a part of breezy should either go in before the 6th (which is difficult to tell because it depends on how fast the NEW queue works) or we should get it in as an independent package. Any packages are candidates? I will try to get the new cmucl in sid as soon as they release. The pre1 package seems pretty stable enough that the release one should present no problem. cl-aspectl could be part of it, if the license problem gets resolved. I care because I'm pessimistic about the release schedule of sarge, the whole extremists situation inside Debian and because Ubuntu does seem a more polished end-user environment. The amount of work seems pretty small: just communication so we get a stable version into their next release and then playing nice with bug reports. Those are reasonable issues, Peter. -- Kevin Rosenberg kevin at rosenberg.net From rvb at pro-linux.de Tue Jun 7 00:40:26 2005 From: rvb at pro-linux.de (=?utf-8?B?UmVuw6k=?= van Bevern) Date: Tue, 7 Jun 2005 02:40:26 +0200 Subject: [cl-debian] Bug#297346: getting albert in shape Message-ID: <20050607004025.GE4703@negoyl> retitle 297346 ITA: albert owner 297346 ! thanks As I am working on a package of AspectL (ITP 311420), whose documentation is generated by albert, I try getting albert in shape to not provide an undocumented package. In its current state, albert neither works with CMUCL (probably others) (#312277) nor with SBCL. For the first issue, I have a solution ready. The issue about SBCL is: SBCL uses SIMPLE-STRING for strings since the time it supports UTF-8, no matter if the string really has UTF-8 characters. This is perfectly fine by the HyperSpec, as it does not require implementations to use the "strictest possible" string type. However, Albert (and also cl-xmls) assert SIMPLE-BASE-STRING for their XML strings, that may only contain ASCII. This is IMO the wrong way of assuring that a string is ASCII-only, but it breaks Albert and cl-xmls (probably others) for SBCL. The main requirements are: > * should work with big archives (cmucl) This is where Darcs can be a bit slow at times. > * should support a three-way merge (original, debianised version, new > upstream) This is not a problem. There is, for example, darcs-buildpackage that keeps a branch for upstream and one for debian. When a new upstream version arrives, you import it to the upstream branch and synchronize it with the debian one. Another solution would be to manage the debian/ directory in Darcs only, because merges are sometimes very slow (see above) and collect the patches using dpatch or cdbs' simple-patchsys. This should deserve enough power to everybody. :) > * can tag releases Darcs. > * off-line use would be great Again, Darcs. > Does anyone have strong ideas about any of the newer systems? I know > that the merge is a pain with CVS, so I'm willing to use something else... Besindes Darcs builtin merging algorithm, one can specify external applications for the task. Darcs also has the advantage of being very easy to use and it enables foreign persons to send in patches easily using "darcs send" that can be applied by piping their E-Mail through "darcs apply". > cl-aspectl could be part of it, if the license problem gets resolved. Have not heard of Pascal Costanza about this yet. But is the Creative Commons Attribution License a problem for Ubuntu Universe as it is for Debian? Johnsen * URL : http://sf.net/projects/clg * License : LGPL, MIT Description : GTK and Glade bindings for Common Lisp CLG provides bindings to GTK 2.6 and Glade in a Lisp-like manner. There are other GTK bindings for Common Lisp, all of them which have some disadvantages IMHO: cl-clg: Supports GTK 2.6, works fine on CMUCL, needs modifications to SBCLs FFI to support callbacks. The second issue is about to be solved, at least there are discussions and work on the SBCL development mailinglist about including these modifications. cl-gtk: Supports GTK 2.0, not as recent as CLG and talks down a pipe to a daemon like CLM. Tricky to build on recent CMUCL and SBCL. lambda-gtk: Suffers from the same problem als cl-clg, but its interface is not very lisp-alike at all. lgtk: lacks a lot of GTK 2.0 functionality, resembles the C-API as much as possible (imho a downside) cl-clg comes with example programs and the whole GTK test suite translated to CL, as well as an GTK based inspector. It cleanly compiles with CMUCL and SBCL from unstable (after the FFI modifications that are to be found http://jupiter.td.org.uit.no/lisp/sbcl-0.8.21-af.tar.gz and could also be packaged) Ren?
