It's not supported on a mac (not even players, I don't think), but
Camtasia (http://www.techsmith.com/) produces some incredibly small
videos for most desktop stuff. Its compression algorithm is tailored
to the capture of computer sessions. Maybe there's something similar
yet cross-platform. But compression algorithms designed for
full-motion video are of course going to do a horrible job on screen
capture.
