my guess (but it's just a guess) is that without the
<html><head>...</head><body> and </body></html> tags, which are
rendered by the simple-window-componet's render-on method, your
browser didn't know what to make of the html and gave you a white
page.

could you compare the html actualy generated by the two setups?
