[asdf-install-devel] installation trouble

im following the install instructions exactly as they instruct but when i
do:

(asdf-operate 'asdf:compile-op :asdf-install)

it says "component "asdf-install" not found". my .clisprc file has this in
it when i try the command that gives me the error:

#-:asdf (load "/usr/share/common-lisp/source/asdf/asdf.fas")
(pushnew "/usr/share/common-lisp/systems/" asdf:*central-registry* :test
#'equal)

i dont get it :'(
