I'm not convinced this can be done portably on a large enough number
of implementations. Also, the only reason to use it would be as a
prelude to run-program, in which case it's not thread-safe, and using
/usr/bin/env is safer (though not portable to Windows). That said, if
you write it, I'll gladly apply the patch.
